1931 Model A Truck - Day 5 - Natchez Trace Parkway
Natchez Trace Parkway to Louisianna (492 miles)
⇐Day 4 |
Day 6⇒
Day 5 had the most scheduled miles. In the afternoon when it was hot and after hours of 50 mph driving, the fuel percolation problems returned. We met a lot of interesting and very nice people while fooling with the car, including a guy biking to Louisiana from Iowa, another other one bicycling with his dog in the trailer - he said he was on his 15th bicycle and had already done 37,000 miles. Another guy stopped and wouldn't leave until we assured him that the car ran, just not well. He was taking someone else for a ride on the parkway and said he'd stop back in a little bit and take us anywhere we needed. He also pointed us to Maben Auto Parts. In Maben we met a number of other people who were all very helpful. One guy went and bought us tinfoil to shield the fuel line, another guy gave directions to the auto parts store and helped push start the car when the battery was low. The folks at Maben Auto Parts were also very nice. They told me to come back which we wouldn't mind doing but really hoped that wouldn't be necessary. It was a really long day but we still did almost 500 miles.
.
There was a bridge out and a lengthy detour on the Natchez Trace Parkway. One interesting part was that the return to the parkway was at Merriweather Lewis' grave.
One of the many sections of the original Trace.
More scenes from the Trace....
A lousy picture, but the only one showing us making it to Louisiana.
